Gain hands-on nonprofit experience while helping survivors find safety, support, and advocacy.

Internship Opportunities

The Domestic Violence Resource Center (DVRC) provides safety, support, advocacy, and resources to individuals and families impacted by domestic violence. We work collaboratively with community partners to promote safety, personal dignity, and access to services for residents of Washington County.

Internships at DVRC provide students with hands-on experience in nonprofit work while developing an understanding of domestic violence, survivor advocacy, confidentiality, trauma-informed practices, and community collaboration.

Interns work in all areas of programing. Specific responsibilities vary based on student interests, availability, and agency needs and may include:

  • Answering the Helpline and assisting Drop-In Center visitors
  • Providing advocacy and support to survivors
  • Assisting clients with navigating the judicial system and court processes.
  • Supporting social media and website content
  • Maintaining confidential client files and databases
  • Assisting with development, outreach, and volunteer activities
  • Updating resources for advocates and survivors
  • Supporting emergency shelter workshops under staff supervision

In partnership with students from the University of Rhode Island, DVRC offers structured workshops within the emergency shelter program. Workshops may include self-care, mindfulness, creative expression, and community building and are designed to support emotional well-being and provide a sense of normalcy during a period of crisis and transition.

Interns may work across DVRC’s multiple locations and program settings, including the emergency shelter and court office located in the McGrath Judicial Building in South Kingstown. The main office at 61 Main Street in Wakefield includes administrative, development, communications, education, support group, Drop-In Center, and Helpline spaces.

All interns are expected to maintain confidentiality, respect the privacy and autonomy of survivors, and follow DVRC’s policies and trauma-informed practices. If you are interested in applying for an internship with the DVRC please contact Sue at sczekalski@dvrcsc.org
